Ice, snow or wet conditions
Why do winter tyres have to be fitted? And – does that have to done at all events?
Article 2 Paragraph 3a StVO (German road traffic regulations) stipulates that a motor vehicle’s equipment must be adapted to the prevailing weather conditions. This includes suitable tyres as well as antifreeze in the windscreen washer system.
In other words: adapting to prevailing weather conditions means that in winter you are on the safe side with winter tyres. Failure to comply with the German regulation on tyres (Winterreifen-Verordnung) can incur a fine of up to 40 euros and a driver penalty point.
The consequences can be more severe in the event of an accident in which the car is still equipped for the summer although winter equipment would have been necessary, since this could possibly even render the comprehensive insurance cover void.
Rental cars from Euromobil are normally fitted with winter tyres during the winter period.
